TWO FACES OF CHINA - China Tibet Conflict H 29?x W 17? x D 10?
This sculpture portrays an Oriental male from the border regions of China. A Peking Opera mask is painted onto his faces so that the facial expressions are visible. A painted face allows us to see the character of the figure. The face frightens away the evil spirits. One face portrays Anger, the other face Tranquility. One side represents Tibet and the mountainous border regions of China where the Ethnic peoples want autonomy. On the other side is written a quote from Wei Zheng 580- 643 AD. An historian in the Tang Dynasty court who said ?Listen to both sides and you will be enlightened; listen to only one side and you will be left in the dark.?
