This sculpture depicts
the mountain deity. She is wearing a traditional wedding headdress
often found in the Yunan, Dali province. She is one of the Bai people
who live in the mountains on the Yunan /Tibetan border region of China.
Some of these tribes are matriarchal. On my first visit to Dali I
watched beautiful embroidered shoes being made out of tyre scraps, a
government cadre laughed and commented on how backwards the mountain
people were. I saw another side, of beauty, exquisite craft and
ingenuity. These were warm people whose traditions were being eroded.
Like their land.
